What is the difference between Life Coaching and Mentoring?
This is a great question!
A Coach does NOT OFFER ADVICE even if being solicited directly by the client. Coaching is based on the tenet that the client has all the resources they need and are the experts in their own lives. If your coach feels you may need other information or resources, they will always seek your permission before making suggestions.
A Mentor is much like a teacher or tutor. They share their known solutions and their own experiences with the client for their consideration as possible solutions. At Under Your Hat, we use an “Appreciative Mentoring” approach which is solution- and strength-based, allowing the client’s strengths to be utilized as fully as possible.
It is our practice at Under Your Hat to always ask coaching clients for permission to share knowledge with them and will do that only when it they both agree that it will help the client move forward toward their stated goal(s).
